We are continuing our readings on popular culture this week. Tuesdays class dealt with culturalism and the study of popular culture and Thursdays class talked about the economics of popular culture and Marxism. In class on Thursday we actually watched Super bowl commercials and tied them into our readings. We talked about how the commercials are trying to appeal to us in different ways – the use of humor or nostalgia, for instance. The economic aspect of popular culture, to me, seems more suited for a marketing class or some sort of economics class, not an English class. When we talk about the value of a good, for instance, we are talking about the willingness to buy, which I am learning about in Microeconomics. It just goes to show that everything is connected.
