The Bufree article that was required reading for Tuesday January 15th dealt with tutoring in a writer center. First, Brufee talks about whether or not tutoring should be required. He makes a good point - if tutoring was required and not a willing act; those being tutored may be reluctant or downright rude. When people are allowed to act according to what they believe is in their own good they are far more receptive to advice and willing to change then those who are forced into it. It’s a rare occurrence when someone is forced to do something and they gladly take on the task with an open mind. I believe that requiring people to go to the writing center probably does more harm than good in most situations because forcing people makes act in a negative manner. In this case it can have a negative effect on their grade and perception of writing classes.
